Window units or central air in Rockford
Plenty of Rockford households still get through July with a unit in the bedroom window. The arithmetic behind that habit has shifted: the airport averaged about 14.8 days a year at 90°F or above in 1991-2020 and about 18.8 in 2016-2025, and the warm nights rose with them.

The nights are the bigger change
At Chicago Rockford International Airport, nights that never dropped below 70°F went from 8.9 a year to 12.8, and nights that held at 65°F or above went from 34.7 to 44.4 (NOAA, 1991-2020 compared with 2016-2025). On a night like that, the upstairs of an older Rockford house keeps the afternoon's heat until dawn. A window fan just stirs the same muggy air.

Window and portable units, honestly
They are cheap and nobody needs a permit. They also take over a window, need hauling out each fall, and a single-hose portable unit works against itself: it exhausts room air outside, which pulls hot outdoor air back in through every gap, so it cools less than a window unit with the same rating.
Central air
Since most Rockford homes already have a gas furnace with ducts, central air means a coil set on that furnace plus a condenser outside. It runs quietly and pulls moisture out of every room the ducts reach, which on a sticky July night matters about as much as the thermostat number. Installation details.
Ductless
For a radiator house, or an attic room the ducts never served, ductless heads land between the two: more efficient and quieter than window units, no ductwork, and heating in winter too on most models. Ductless mini splits.
Signs it is time to move up
- The house has three or more window units, and one dies most summers.
- Someone living there is elderly or has a condition that heat makes worse.
- The upstairs bedrooms never cool off overnight.
- The furnace is close to replacement, which makes adding a coil or going to a heat pump easier.
If you rent, check with the landlord before anything permanent goes in. A window unit comes out when you move; central air stays, and inside the City of Rockford it requires a mechanical permit.
Asked around Rockford
Is central air worth it in Rockford?
For most houses here, yes, especially where a gas furnace and ducts already exist. The airport now logs more 90 degree days and more 70 degree nights than its 1991 to 2020 average. Radiator houses usually go ductless instead.
Are portable air conditioners worth it?
They are the simplest to set up and the weakest performers. A single-hose model pushes room air outside, and warm outdoor air leaks in to replace it. A window unit with the same rating generally cools better.
