Air conditioner repair in Rockford

Most Rockford AC calls come in two waves: the first sticky week of June, when a system that sat since October gets switched on, and the middle of a 90 degree stretch in July. The part that quit is often a small electrical one, and a technician can usually name it on the first visit.

Match the symptom to the likely part

Over 2016-2025 the airport south of town averaged 18.8 afternoons a year at 90°F or above, and July highs now average 84.9°F (NOAA). Seven months of sitting, then weeks of running flat out in river-valley humidity, is a hard schedule for a few specific parts.

What you noticeWhat a technician usually findsPublished price
Outdoor unit hums, fan blade sits stillA weak start capacitor$100 to $400 (Fixr)
Thermostat calls for cooling, outdoor unit stays silentA pitted or stuck contactor; insects nest in that box over winter$100 to $450 (This Old House)
A puddle around the basement furnaceA plugged condensate line from the coil on top of the furnaceUsually a short visit
Frost on the fat copper line, weak airflowLow charge from a leak, or a starved coil$200 to $1,500 for leak work (Fixr)
Outdoor unit runs, nothing at the registersThe furnace blower or its board, since the furnace fan moves the cold airDepends on the part
Loud clunk, then breaker trips againPossibly the compressor$600 to $3,000 (Fixr)

The drain problem deserves its own sentence because it is so common here. The cooling coil in a typical Rockford basement sits right on the gas furnace, and on a muggy afternoon it pulls a steady stream of water out of the air. When dust or algae closes off that small line, the water finds the furnace cabinet or the floor. Caught early, it is a cheap fix.

Five minutes before you pick up the phone

  1. Look at the thermostat. Cooling mode, a setpoint under the room temperature, fresh batteries if it takes them.
  2. Go to the panel. The furnace and the condenser are normally on separate breakers. Also look at the gray disconnect box mounted on the wall by the condenser. One reset of a tripped breaker is fine; a second trip means leave it off.
  3. Find the furnace service switch, which looks like an ordinary light switch on the furnace or the joist above it. Somebody bumps it off more often than you would think.
  4. Pull the filter. If it is gray and bowed, swap it, because a choked filter can freeze the coil.
  5. Seeing frost? Thermostat to off, fan to on, and wait for it to melt before trying cooling again. Running a frozen system can kill the compressor.
  6. Walk outside. A condenser fan that isn't turning, or a coil furred over with June cottonwood seed or mower clippings, tells the technician a lot.

Leave the electrical cover on the condenser closed. The capacitor inside can still hold a charge after the power is off.

Paying for it

For a national benchmark, Fixr's 2026 numbers put the typical AC repair at $250 to $700 with a $375 average, and This Old House puts common fixes at $150 to $650. Neither is a Rockford quote. Expect a service call or diagnostic charge too, and ask on the phone whether it gets credited if you approve the work. Every published range in one place, or test a number you were already given: is this AC quote fair?

When a repair stops making sense

Plenty of systems around Rockford went in during the 1990s and 2000s, and many of those have now run 20 summers or more. On a unit in that range, a compressor or coil diagnosis is the moment I would ask for a replacement price before saying yes to the repair. A capacitor on the same unit is still worth fixing. Working through the decision.

Asked around Rockford

Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?

In a Rockford basement-furnace house the usual suspects are a capacitor or fan motor at the condenser, a coil iced over behind a dirty filter, a refrigerant leak, or a thermostat left on fan. Swap the filter and look at both breakers before booking.

Why does my outdoor AC unit hum but not start?

A hum with no fan movement very often means the start capacitor has weakened. That part stores a charge even with the breaker off, so it is a technician's job.

Why is there water around my furnace in the summer?

The AC coil normally rides on top of the furnace and sends its condensation down a small drain line or into a pump. If the line plugs, the water backs up and spills. Shut the cooling off and have the line cleared before the furnace gets wet.

Should I cover my outdoor AC unit for the winter?

A breathable lid on top keeps falling ice off the fan, but full plastic wrap holds moisture against the coil. Keep drifts shoveled away, and take any cover off before the first warm day in May.
