AC quit in a Rockford heat wave
The equipment can wait an hour; the people in the house can't always. Get anyone older, very young or with a heart or lung condition into a cooler space first, call 911 for signs of heat stroke, and then work through the quick checks below before you book a technician.

Quick checks at the furnace and the condenser
- At the thermostat: cooling mode, and a setpoint lower than the current room reading.
- At the electrical panel: one breaker for the furnace, another for the outdoor condenser, and a separate shutoff box on the house wall next to the condenser. Reset a tripped breaker a single time.
- At the furnace: its service switch has to be on, because the furnace blower is what pushes the cooled air upstairs.
- At the filter slot: a clogged filter gets replaced now.
- On the copper lines: frost or ice means switch the system off, set the fan to run, and let it melt. Restarting a frozen system risks the compressor.
Watch the people, not the thermostat
The airport reading is taken in open ground south of the city. A second-floor bedroom under a Rockford roof in July can run well past it. The National Weather Service describes two stages to watch for.
Heat exhaustion. Signs include heavy sweating with skin that feels cold, pale and clammy, a pulse that is fast but weak, nausea, unusual tiredness, dizziness, headache, or fainting. Get the person somewhere cooler, loosen tight clothes, and have them take small sips of water.
Heat stroke. Body temperature reaches 103°F or more, the skin turns hot and red, the pulse is fast and strong, and the person may become confused or pass out. That is a 911 call, not a wait-and-see.
A box fan feels like help, but the CDC cautions that electric fans may not prevent heat-related illness once it gets very hot. A few hours in an air-conditioned building does more: the public library, a big store, a cooling site, a relative with working central air.
Finding a cool place
Cooling sites around Rockford are announced heat wave by heat wave, and the locations and hours shift. Look at the current notices from the City of Rockford and from Winnebago or Boone County, and phone the site before heading over.
Paying the utility bill
The state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program runs through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. What the DCEO page says about it:
- Its main purpose is helping eligible households with home energy costs, mostly winter heating.
- Income limits are reset each year, capped at 60% of state median income.
- Applications go through a local agency, and the state lists those agencies by county.
- The Help Illinois Families call center number is 1-833-711-0374.

Asked around Rockford
Where can I cool off in Rockford during a heat wave?
Libraries and large stores keep the air on, and during heat advisories the City of Rockford and the counties often post cooling locations. Those lists change, so check the current notice and call first.
Can I get help paying energy bills in Illinois?
LIHEAP, run by Illinois DCEO, helps eligible households with home energy costs, mostly for winter heat. Apply through the local agency for your county, or call Help Illinois Families at 1-833-711-0374.
Is a fan enough during a heat wave?
Often it isn't. The CDC warns that electric fans may not prevent heat-related illness in very hot weather, so plan to spend the worst afternoon hours in an air-conditioned building.
