AC installation and replacement in Rockford

Most Rockford homes already have the hard half of central air: a gas furnace in the basement pushing air through ducts. A new system adds a cooling coil on that furnace and a condenser out back. Published installed prices run $5,800 to $14,400 (Fixr), and the house sets where in that span you land.

Which job is yours

Swapping out a tired system. This is the bulk of the work around Rockford, where a lot of condensers date from the 1990s and 2000s. Expect the installer to replace the coil above the furnace along with the condenser, since the two are built as a pair and the newer refrigerants make a mismatch worse. The refrigerant background.

First-time central air in a furnace house. Across the 19 ZIP codes we cover, 83% of homes heat with gas (Census ACS 2020-2024), most through a forced-air furnace. Here the crew sets a cased coil on the furnace, runs copper to a pad outside, adds a condensate drain, and has an electrician's circuit and a weatherproof disconnect put in for the condenser.

A boiler house. Hot water radiators give a coil nowhere to sit. You are choosing between wall-mounted ductless heads, a small-duct high-velocity system threaded through closets, or attic ductwork for the top floor. How ductless works here.

Seven lines a good quote carries

  1. Tonnage and the reasoning behind it. A Manual J load calculation (from ACCA) is the standard; the City of Rockford's mechanical permit form even has a box asking whether Manual J, S and D were done. How sizing should work.
  2. Exact model numbers for both the condenser and the coil, plus which refrigerant they use.
  3. The efficiency rating. Under the 2023 federal rule, a split air conditioner put in anywhere in the northern region, Illinois included, has to meet 13.4 SEER2 or better.
  4. A line for electrical: is the new breaker and disconnect in the price or extra?
  5. A line for ducts: did anyone measure them, and is any duct work included?
  6. The permit. In the city, an AC swap or addition needs a mechanical permit, and that application lists the contractor's City license number. Rockford permit rules.
  7. Written warranty terms, with labor spelled out separately from parts.

Price, in more detail

Fixr's $8,750 national average for central air assumes a full set of new ducts, so a Rockford ranch reusing sound basement ductwork usually comes in under it. A big two-story with a second system for the upstairs pushes the other way. If you want the heat pump version of the same job, Fixr's installed range is $5,000 to $15,000. Heat pumps in this climate.

One thing to strike from any quote: the federal 25C credit. The IRS says it does not apply to equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, so an installer still counting it toward your net price has made an error. ComEd's own rebate list is a separate matter and changes each program year; ask which items on the quote qualify.

When to shop

Crews around here book up once the first hot spell hits in June and stay that way through any July run of 90s. Pricing a replacement in April or May, or in September with installation planned before next summer, gives you more say over the date.

Paperwork that protects you

Per the Illinois Attorney General, a contractor on a job of $1,000 or more should hand you the "Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights" pamphlet, and a contract you sign at your kitchen table can be cancelled within three business days. Checking a quote, and your rights.

Asked around Rockford

How much does it cost to add central air to a house with a furnace?

Fixr publishes $5,800 to $14,400 installed for a new central air system nationally. When the furnace and basement ducts are already in decent shape, adding the coil and condenser tends to price toward the bottom of that span. Ask for line items.

What size AC do I need?

Square footage alone won't tell you. A Manual J load calculation looks at insulation, windows and exposure, and the Department of Energy cautions that rules of thumb tend to produce oversized equipment.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Rockford?

Within Rockford city limits, yes: a mechanical permit, pulled by a contractor holding a City of Rockford mechanical license. Loves Park, Machesney Park, Belvidere and the villages each handle permits on their own terms.
